"Gotham needs a hero with a face," we are told. Yes, the world needs a witness to the truth, the goodness and the beauty of reality; a witness to the order of creation; a witness to the enduring reason through which all things were made; a witness with a human face.
We don't call those people superheroes. We call them saints.

Saint Batman?
An interesting read for those who have seen the new Batman movie from Father Raymond J. de Souza, a Roman Catholic priest at Queen's University in Australia. Many of my friends came to mind as I read this one.

Just saw the Dark Knight last evening, and I think that article is very astute. Batman, for all of his self-sacrifice, is an imperfect witness to objective goodness because he himself is merely a persona created by Bruce Wayne. Bruce is aware that he created Batman out of a need to believe in justice in goodness--not out of a direct experience of it. He himself has no certainty that the universe is not, as the Joker envisions it, an absurdity. What Gotham needs is a direct witness to reason, light, goodness, meaning and order--in short, a saint.
